If you raced these cars in reverse, at first you would be fine. But after some time and distance, the engine would begin straining and at some point it would red line. Why?
because you only have one speed… and it’s a low gear… but this is NOT unique to american muscle cars, all cars are that way… thus racing in reverse would only be done at low speeds by anyone in any car.
in forward, depending on the year, in a car, you have 2-8 speeds (gears) instead of one.
Reverse is usually geared lower than first gear so it would be even worse than trying to race in first gear alone. Just like first gear a car can easily go faster than the engine can safely run. Unless you are going to keep the RPMs at a safe speed (and if you are racing chances are you wouldn’t) than you will over speed the engine and more than likely damage it.
Edit: I would assume that the Saab’s reverse is either geared higher or has a much higher red-line (or both).
This is true of any car. If you floor it and never shift to the next gear, the engine will hit it’s redline. On old cars there wasno rev limiter and the engine could destroy itself. On modern cars, the computer prevents that.
